Public transportation in the United States is at an exciting and paradoxical crossroads. Enthusiasm for connecting neighborhoods with activity centers – and cities with each other – via bus and rail has never been higher. At the same time, state and local funding for transit is razor-thin as municipalities grapple with cutting service in the face of limited tax revenues. The good news in both cases is that planning for transit is still happening. Because communities realize that public transport done right cuts travel times, stimulates economic development, protects our environment, relieves social inequities – the list goes on and on.
